What are British Standards?
British Standards are the codes of best practice that
improve safety, efficiency, interoperability and facilitate
trade. They cover every area of life from technical
guidelines for production processes in a wide range of
industries to specifications for making things happen.
British Standards is the National Standards Body of the UK
responsible for facilitating, publishing, drafting, and
marketing standards and related information products.
British Standards provides organizations with leading-edge
best practice solutions that represent and support the needs
of UK business and society at home and abroad.
British Standard 5852 (BS 5852) contains methods of
testing for the assessment of the ignitability of
upholstered seating by flaming ignition sources. Flaming
ignition sources include a a burning match, smoldering
cigarette, or the burning of four double sheets of full-size
newspaper. Specifically this standard applies to testing
specimens that are single material combinations, such as
covers and fillings used in upholstered seating and complete
items of seating. These tests use ignition cribs and burner
tubes in order to test the progressive smoldering ignition.
The methods include testing with flaming ignition sources to
upholstered seating composites and testing with smoldering
or flaming ignition sources to completed upholstered
furniture. The assessments are relevant to sources that are
applied accidentally but not to deliberate acts of arson and
vandalism.
British Standard 5867-2:1980 (BS 5867-2:1980)
describes the requirements for testing the flammability of
fabrics intended to be used as drapes or curtains. Depending
on the end use, the fabrics will endure Type A, Type B, or
Type C performance requirements. Each of these are in
performed in accordance with British Standard 5438, test 2.
Once the type of performance requirement is determined, the
test will determine whether or not a cleansing procedure is
necessary. The fabrics will be tested in both the machine
direction and the cross direction. A significant factor is
whether the part of any hole or the lowest boundary of any
flame reaches the vertical edge or upper edge of the
fabrics.
