Boston Fire Code – IX-1
An open flame test that mirrors the criteria for NFPA 701 1989. Note: Only the City of Boston can issue flame certificates for this code. We will test the fabric and inform you as to whether we think it will pass.

MVSS 302
A small-scale component test developed for automotive interior materials. The test sample is ignited in a horizontal position by a calibrated gas flame for 15 seconds.

NFPA 130 (Upholstery only)
This test specifies fire protection and life safety requirements for underground, surface, and elevated transit and passenger rail systems.

A small-scale composite test for determining resistance to cigarette ignition for materials used in upholstered furniture.

NFPA 701 1989
A small-scale flammability test to measure the ignition resistance of a fabric after it is exposed to a flame for 12 seconds.

NFPA 701 1996
Small-scale flammability test for all hanging decorative materials.

NFPA 701 1999
Small-scale flammability test, similar to NFPA 701 1996, with the addition of small weights to the fabric edge to keep fabric taught.

Testing for upholstery or drapery; similar to NFPA 701 1989

Fabric Characteristic Testing Services

Wyzenbeek Abrasion Resistance Test
The test fabric is pulled tight in a frame and held stationary. Individual test specimens cut from the warp and weft direction are then rubbed back and forth using an ACT approved #10 cotton duck fabric. The degree or fabric wear is tested.
Sample size required: 12” x 24”

Wet/Dry Crocking (AATCC 8 or AATCC 116)
A test to measure the transfer of dye from the surface of a solid (8) or printed (116) fabric onto another surface by rubbing.
Sample size required: 12” x 12”

Hydrostatic Water Resistance Test (Suter Test)
A test to the fabric face with sustained water pressure over a recorded period of time. Records the amount of time for water to push through the fabric back.
